About this lesson

In this lesson you will read and listen to two engaging texts in English – one about a man who woke up in hospital with no memories, and the other about a fan of gangster films named Jerry Baldwin. You will practise recognising and using the Past Simple, Past Continuous and Past Perfect. You will answer questions about the texts, finish sentences and fill in words from the text. The lesson develops skills in reading comprehension, talking about past events and accurate use of the past tenses in English.

  • hospital ward He was in a hospital ward, a long room full of beds and other patients.

  • rattle off Jerry would rattle off all the details of that movie.
  • collection Jerry had a home collection of over 1,000 gangster videos.
  • ammunition He also bought a couple of boxes of ammunition.
  • revolver He went to a gun store and bought a used 38 caliber revolver for $300.
  • limp Jerry now walks with a limp and a cane, just like some gangsters.

  • plot He could tell you the name of the movie, the director, the stars, and the plot.
