Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, better known as Mahatma Gandhi, was an Indian freedom fighter and spiritual leader of the Indian independence movement, which in 1947 ended British rule of the country. He is also known as the 'Father of the Nation.'
Gandhi became famous for his concept of nonviolent protests to achieve political goals, based on the idea of ahimsa (also spelled ahimsa) from Indian philosophy derived from Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism.
With this idea, he inspired world-renowned political leaders such as Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, and others.
Mahatma is a Sanskrit term meaning 'great soul.'
