¿Es un tiempo o un modo? Lo que llamamos imperativo es en realidad un PRESENTE DE IMPERATIVO; en otras palabras, el único tiempo verbal del modo imperativo. El imperativo lo usamos para ORDENAR (dar órdenes), PEDIR (hacer un petición) o ROGAR.

In other words, what we call the IMPERATIVE TENSE is the present tense in the imperative mood, for which only four verb forms are provided: tú, vosotros, Ud., Uds. However, this is not the only way to express a command, request, or piece of advice — with or without 'exclamation marks'*. Sometimes we need to resort to the PRESENT tense in the subjunctive mood, verbal periphrases, and even rhetorical questions.

Examples:

Let me come! – ¡Que venga!
Let's work faster! – ¡Тrabajemos más rápido!
Would you be quiet already! – ¡Que te calles ya!
The bill, please! – ¿Me trae la cuenta?
I should be on my way! – Mejor me voy.
¡No hagas ruido! – Don't make noise!
No os vayais tan rápido.* – Don't rush off!

*In Spanish, not all imperative sentences are exclamatory.
