Los sustitutos de los verbos modales son necesarios cuando el verbo modal correspondiente no tiene forma para un tiempo verbal determinado, por ejemplo futuro o pasado. En estos casos utilizamos sus sustitutos.

Ejemplos:
tiempo presente tiempo pasado
He can do it. He could do it.
(Él puede hacerlo); He was able to do it.
(Él pudo hacerlo)
tiempo futuro
He will be able to do it. (Él podrá hacerlo)
Aquí hay un ejemplo con must:
Tiempo presente / tiempo pasado
He must do it. He had to do it.
(Él debe hacerlo) (Él tuvo que
hacerlo)
tiempo futuro
He will have to do it. (Él tendrá que hacerlo)
