Los estudiantes de inglés a menudo tienen dificultades con el uso de preposiciones en expresiones como estas: On time / in time; At the end / in the end;
On time – significa exactamente a la hora, no más tarde. El evento ocurre en el momento exactamente planeado.
The 11.45 train left ON TIME .(= IT LEFT AT 11.45 )
El tren de las 11.45 salió a tiempo. (a las 11.45)
Please, be there ON TIME.( =don't be late /be there at 7.30)
In time – lo suficientemente pronto para hacer algo;
Will you be at home IN TIME for dinner?(= soon enough for dinner);
Sin embargo: si incluimos 'just' nuevamente el significado es 'exactamente a tiempo'
We got to the station JUST IN TIME to catch the train.
At the end (of something )- el momento en que algo termina.
at the end of the month / at the end of the film /at the end of January;
I'm going away at the end of January.
Lo opuesto de 'at the end' es 'at the beginning' (La expresión opuesta a 'al final' es 'al principio');
at the beginning of the concert/ of January;
In the end = finally - se utiliza cuando decimos cuál ha sido el resultado final de una situación determinada;
Tom couldn't decided where to go for his holidays.He decided to go to Italy in the end .
