To determine the gender of a given noun, we can follow the rules given in the third point of this topic. Rule 3 covers nouns whose gender is determined by that of their generic concept.

3. Nouns whose gender is determined by that of their generic concept:

a) Masculine are the nouns that denote names of:

  • rivers, seas, oceans, lakes, mountains, volcanoes, cardinal directions, because their generic concepts are masculine:

el río – el Danubio, el Ebro, el Guadalquivir, etc.

el mar – el Mediterráneo, el Mar Negro, etc.

el océano – el Atlántico, el Pacífico, etc.

el lago – el Titicaca, el Balatón, etc.

el monte – el Pirin, los Alpes, los Balcanes, etc.

el volcán – el Vesubio, etc.

los puntos cardinales – el Norte, el Sur, el Este, el Oeste

  • days of the week and months

el día – el lunes, el martes, el miércoles, etc.

el mes – el enero, el febrero, el marzo, etc.

  • trees

el árbol – el castaño, el ciprés, el tilo, el cerezo, el olivo, etc. Exceptions: la higuera, la encina

b) Feminine are nouns that denote names of:

  • sciences – la ciencia – la historia, la geografía, la física, etc.
  • islands – la isla – las baleares, las Canarias, etc.
  • letters – la eme, la ele, la ka, etc.
  • fruits – la fruta – la pera, la cereza, la naranja, etc. Exceptions: el higo, el plátana, el limón
