Prepositions with Genitive: Usage and Examples in German

Learn when and how to use prepositions with Genitive in German. This article explains the preposition 'wegen' and the adverbs 'deswegen' and 'deshalb'.

The preposition wegen (because of) is used with Genitive and introduces a reason:

Wegen schlechten Wetters bleiben wir zu Hause.

Wegen des schnellen Fahrens hat der Autofahrer den Hund nicht gesehen.

The adverbs deswegen (therefore) and deshalb (therefore)

Using the adverbs deswegen and deshalb, the examples above can be expressed in another way:

Das Wetter ist schlecht. Deswegen/Deshalb bleiben wir zu Hause.

Der Autofahrer hat zu schnell gefahren. Deswegen/ Deshalb hat er den Hund nicht gesehen.
