Basket Case
A person who has become helpless or ineffective at a given moment as a result of nervousness, irritability, hysteria, panic, or stress.
Etymology
The expression originates from World War I and refers to a soldier who had lost all his limbs, carried in a stretcher – litter / 'basket'.
Today it means a state of helplessness, similar to the metaphorical removal of limbs.
