It originates from the rhyming slang 'boracic lint' → 'skint' (skint – broke, very poor).
Boracic lint is a type of medical gauze – a surgical bandage soaked in a hot saturated solution of boric acid and glycerin and then dried. It has been used since at least the 19th century, but today it is rarely seen.
Boracic is often also pronounced as brassic ['bræsɪk].
