Lesson 10: Polite Debate and Argumentation – Expressing Agreement/Disagreement and Counter-Arguments in Italian

In this final B1 lesson, we will refine our polite debating skills: expressing opinions, agreeing and disagreeing, introducing contrast and concession using the right linking expressions.

About this lesson

Lesson 10 consolidates key argumentation strategies for everyday and semi-formal situations — in a meeting, a team project, or when discussing social topics such as the environment and technology. You will practise introducing opinions, presenting counter-arguments and disagreeing politely, as well as using linking words such as tuttavia, nonostante, and benché/sebbene with the appropriate mood.

40 minutes

What you'll learn

  • Express opinions and positions using nuanced markers (a mio avviso, secondo me).
  • Agree and disagree politely, and propose alternatives (proporrei, preferirei che…).
  • Use contrast and concession linking words correctly: tuttavia, nonostante, benché/sebbene + congiuntivo.
  • Structure a short argument and counter-argument in everyday discussions.
  • Conduct a brief debate on a familiar topic and reach an agreement (mettersi d'accordo).
