Lesson 6: Complaints and Claims – Raising Issues Politely and Finding Solutions

We practise how to file complaints, describe problems, and propose solutions politely and confidently in German (B1).

About this lesson

In this lesson you will master the language of complaints and claims in real-life situations: over the phone, at a service desk, and by email. You will practise polite requests using Konjunktiv II, cause-and-effect connectors (weil/deshalb/trotzdem), and the passive voice to keep the focus on the action. You will learn to express disappointment and expectations, and to negotiate solutions calmly and professionally.

40 minutes

What you'll learn

  • Formulate polite requests and suggestions using Konjunktiv II (würde, könnte, wäre).
  • Describe a problem, a defect, and an expected resolution clearly and concisely.
  • Use cause-and-effect connectors (weil, deshalb, trotzdem) in complaint contexts.
  • Apply the passive voice (Präsens/Perfekt) to keep the focus on the process: Die Ware wird geliefert / ist geliefert worden.
  • Conduct a short debate or negotiation to reach a resolution (Umtausch, Rückerstattung, Gutschrift, Kulanz).
