Lesson 2: Nuanced Opinions and Decisions in a Business Meeting – Subjunctive and Conditional

Develop the ability to express measured opinions, polite suggestions, and conditional scenarios in French within the context of business meetings and news environments.

About this lesson

In this second B2-level lesson, we focus on the language of professional meetings: how to propose, challenge, negotiate, and summarise with nuance. We will practise the subjunctive after evaluative expressions and connectors of purpose, condition, and concession, as well as the conditional for polite requests and hypothetical scenarios. We will also introduce useful idioms and softening formulas that are typical of business and news settings.

What you'll learn

  • Use the subjunctive after impersonal expressions (il est primordial que, il faudrait que) and markers of doubt or evaluation in a meeting context.
  • Formulate polite requests and cautious suggestions using the conditional (présent and passé).
  • Link arguments with connectors of purpose, condition, and concession (pour que, à condition que, bien que/quoique, dans la mesure où).
  • Understand and use common idioms and discourse markers to soften and add nuance to a position.
  • Summarise, argue, and defend a position on abstract topics (workplace policies, market trends, ethics) in clear and polished French.
