About this lesson

In this lesson you will learn the English words for the different rooms in the house – bedroom, kitchen, living room, bathroom and others. You will master the vocabulary for furniture and household items such as bed, wardrobe, fridge and washing machine. You will practise expressions with 'there is' and 'there are' to say what there is in the different rooms. Through real-life rental adverts and a dialogue, you will improve your ability to communicate in English about the home and your everyday surroundings.

Lesson vocabulary

• bedroom To the right of the front door is my parent's bedroom.
• living room The living room is a big room with two huge windows on the left.
• kitchen The kitchen isn't big enough for the whole family.
• bathroom Next to the bedroom is the bathroom.
• dining room We sometimes eat in the dining room.
• wardrobe There is a bed, wardrobe, big mirror, desk and two chairs.
• armchair I've got a big armchair and I like reading in it before going to bed.
• bedside table There is a bed with a bedside table next to it in the corner.
• cooker Can use a small kitchen with cooker, fridge and washing machine.
• fridge The cooker, the washing-machine, the fridge and the sink take up half of the room.
• washing machine There is a fridge and a washing machine in the kitchen.
• sink There is a double sink in the kitchen.
• cosy It's smaller than my parent's room but it's cosier.
• huge A huge modern house in a quiet neighbourhood.
