Will and Going to are the two most commonly used ways to express future actions in English. Apart from being very similar, there are the following 3 differences between these 2 forms.

1) Predictions

  • Predictions expressed with will are based on the speaker's intuition and experience.
  • Predictions based on going to are based on what is happening at the moment of speaking.

2)

Going to often refers to the near future. It does not refer to a specific moment in the future.

3) Intentions

There is a subtle but noticeable difference – if someone uses the going to form, the person is often speaking about their intentions. In other words, the emphasis is placed on the intention to accomplish something.
