The au combination in the English language

I've noticed that English learners struggle with the pronunciation of the au combination in words like Austria, Australia, auction, austere, etc. This combination has undergone a phonetic transformation, the so-called smoothing and rounding, and the au sound pronounced in medieval England today results in a long 'o'. Correcting the pronunciation requires minimal effort.
