As a teacher at Speaking English Elementary level, I very often encounter the problem 'How to express myself most precisely?' and that's why in the next few publications I'll try to be helpful to my students with information on this topic.
So, I'm starting with the question – what is the difference between the words know, be acquainted with, get acquainted with, recognize, acknowledge:
to recognize- 1) recognize
an old acquaintance- 'I think this time she recognized me'.
somebody's writing, somebody's car, clothes; a tune
2) acknowledge
a new government, a new state
3) acknowledge someone's merits
He is recognized to be the greatest authority on ancient languages
to be acquainted with somebody- be personally acquainted with
I'm not acquainted with the lady / I don't know the lady personally
to get acquainted with somebody – to get to know somebody – get acquainted with
to acquainted somebody/oneself with the facts, with the matter – get acquainted with
an /old/ acquaintance- an /old/ acquaintance
to make friends with- make friends with
to introduce- introduce, present
Let me introduce my friend George/ to you/
to know /somebody/ something/ how to…/- know, be acquainted with, be aware
knowledge – knowledge /poor/ good/ profound knowledge of/
know-how- skill, ability, trade secret
know-all – know-it-all
