On September 26, events across Europe annually commemorate European Day of Languages. Among the activities are 'speed dating' in Prague, a rap competition in Aarhus, a 'world' café in Sofia, a cocktail bar of European languages in Budapest, and many others.
The European Day of Languages is organized jointly by the European Commission and the Council of Europe. It was established in 2001.
The European Union possesses a true linguistic treasure: 23 official languages, nearly 60 regional and minority languages (such as Catalan and Welsh), and more than 175 migrant languages.
The goal is to preserve this diversity and encourage more people to learn another European language, which makes life and work abroad easier and can help neighboring communities interact and understand each other well.
Millions of people from all 45 participating countries take part in the initiative. Hundreds of events across Europe will contribute to celebrating our linguistic diversity and encouraging the learning of foreign languages.
