Sustitución de if
If en inglés puede ser sustituido por palabras o expresiones con el mismo significado. Entre los más utilizados se encuentran:
- as long as
- assuming (that)
- on condition (that)
- on the assumption (that)
- provided (that)
- supposing (that)
- unless
- with the condition (that)
Omisión de if
- Had I known… (en lugar de If I had known…)
- Were you my daughter,… (en lugar de If you were my daughter,…)
- Should you need my advice,… (en lugar de If you should need my advice,…)
If o when
If y when son intercambiables cuando la oración condicional es un hecho o es zero conditional.
- If you heat ice, it melts.
- When you heat ice, it melts.
If se utiliza para algo que, según el hablante, puede ocurrir.
- We can spend the afternoon on the beach if the weather is fine.
When se utiliza para algo que, según el hablante, ocurrirá.
- I will clean up the kitchen right away when I'm back from work.
