Los verbos auxiliares en inglés son be, do, have y will. Cumplen la función de auxiliares cuando van seguidos de otro verbo (principal) con el objetivo de formar una pregunta, una oración negativa, una oración compuesta o la voz pasiva.
Puede ser tanto auxiliar como principal.
Como auxiliar
El verbo do en inglés lo utilizamos como auxiliar en oraciones negativas e interrogativas con la mayoría de verbos principales (excepto be, will, have got y verbos modales) en presente simple y pasado simple. (se utiliza el infinitivo para el verbo principal)
En oraciones negativas:
- Simple Present: He does not play football.
- Simple Past: He did not play football.
En preguntas:
- Simple Present: Does he play football?
- Simple Past: Did he play football? El verbo do es irregular:
- Presente simple: I / we / you / they do, he / she / it does
- Pasado simple: I / he / she / it / we / you / they did
En los siguientes casos en inglés el verbo auxiliar do no se utiliza en oraciones negativas e interrogativas:
Como verbo principal:
- I am not angry. / Are you okay?
En oraciones que contienen otro verbo auxiliar:
- They are not sleeping. / Have you heard that?
En oraciones que contienen un verbo modal (can, may, must, need, ought to, shall, should):
- We need not wait. / Can you repeat that, please?
Cuando la pregunta se refiere al sujeto de la oración:
- Who sings that song?
